Simply the Basics Community Event Helps Create and Connect Families... LITERALLY!

In 2016, Simply the Basics hosted a “Period Party” to reduce stigma, raise menstrual care for people experiencing homelessness, and bring community members together that value the importance of providing basic human needs.

It turns out our community event did that - and then some! The connections made through this event, and opportunity to bring together people that believe in the same values for basic human needs - without stigma - was the first meeting between two people that today have built a family of their own!

Enjoy their story of this very “unclassic meet-cute” below!

“My partner, Rex, and I started our first date at a Simply the Basics Period Party in SF after a girlfriend of mine got sick and had to bail. I actually told him I’d meet him afterward and he pressed, “Dont you have an extra ticket to this fundraiser now?” —I hadnt told him what it was.

When I coyly shared that it was a “Period Party”, his response was, “I’m not afraid of menstruation.”  He showed up with a target bag full of tampons. I learned he shared my desire to help those less fortunate in our community, he won me over that night. ️

Fast forward 2.5 yrs and we now live in Santa Cruz with our little dude, Gustavo (Gus). Mom life has been busy, but I am slowly finding balance and have starred an old newsletter of yours about becoming a chapter lead or local ambassador. Homelessness is a big issue and part of our community here in Santa Cruz, and I would love to help the many women out here trying to get by!

Thank you for all you do!”
