As part of our staff engagement efforts, Finance and Administration’s Senior Vice Chancellor’s Office participated in the UCSF Volunteers program by assembling 500 hygiene kits for Simply the Basics, a San Francisco non-profit dedicated to bringing health and dignity to our homeless community.

In this episode, our featured voice is Meghan Freebeck, the Founder and Board President of Simply the Basics. Simply the Basics is focused on providing access to hygiene for our fellow community members who cannot provide this most basic need for themselves and their families. Simply the Basics has created a unique National Hygiene Bank Model as well as piloting an Open Marketplace for people to list in-kind donations. These services are designed to make it easier for both individuals and other nonprofit organizations to better utilize the in-kind product donations to provide hygiene products for our un-housed and low-income community members and in turn, support their most basic core health needs.

Read MoreMeghan Freebeck, an advocate for the homeless in San Francisco, visited the theatre in 2017 and later got an idea: Shakespeare should be for all. Since the homeless generally don’t go to live theatre, maybe she could bring Shakespeare to the homeless.
Shakespeare wrote for the masses. In the 1600's the pit of London's Globe Theater would have been a boisterous hangout, full of butchers, tanners and commoners who paid a full day's wages to see the show.
That inspired San Francisco homeless advocate Meghan Freeback to bring the Bard back down to earth by bringing Shakespearean actors and a group of homeless people together to discover how the playwright's words can still resonate us today.
"Although Shakespeare's plays have been around for more than 400 years, their significance still resonates today" said Freebeck. ""Using Shakespeare is a safe way for them to explore their own experiences and celebrate the good in their lives."

That’s partly to serve transgender and nonbinary students who menstruate, and also to make the issue more open to both boys and girls.
Read MoreThe whole two-hour exercise was anything but pretentious, she and her new friends said. It was creative, revealing and healing for people who had no homes to call their own but could, for just a couple of hours, escape the anguish that being homeless brings.
“This was even better than I’d hoped,” said Simply the Basics President Meghan Freebeck. “There are no spaces, really, for people without means to just enjoy themselves like this, to come together and share, be social and have fun.”
