Voices of the Community: Episode 16, Simply the Basics

We work a lot like the food bank, but focused on hygiene care”

In this episode, our featured voice is Meghan Freebeck, the Founder and Board President of Simply the Basics. Simply the Basics is focused on providing access to hygiene for our fellow community members who cannot provide this most basic need for themselves and their families. Simply the Basics has created a unique National Hygiene Bank Model as well as piloting an Open Marketplace for people to list in-kind donations. These services are designed to make it easier for both individuals and other nonprofit organizations to better utilize the in-kind product donations to provide hygiene products for our un-housed and low-income community members and in turn, support their most basic core health needs.

A Workshop Helps The Homeless See Themselves In Shakespeare's Plays

Shakespeare wrote for the masses. In the 1600's the pit of London's Globe Theater would have been a boisterous hangout, full of butchers, tanners and commoners who paid a full day's wages to see the show.

That inspired San Francisco homeless advocate Meghan Freeback to bring the Bard back down to earth by bringing Shakespearean actors and a group of homeless people together to discover how the playwright's words can still resonate us today.

Bay Area students join global fight for ‘menstrual equity’

In San Francisco, Simply the Basics, a 3-year-old nonprofit organization and self-proclaimed “hygiene bank,” delivers products to schools once a semester to augment what they already have, and recommends each school put pads and tampons in the library as well as in restrooms and locker rooms for all genders. That’s partly to serve transgender and nonbinary students who menstruate, and also to make the issue more open to both boys and girls.

Shakespeare troupe’s workshop for homeless brings hopes, fears to center stage

The whole two-hour exercise was anything but pretentious, she and her new friends said. It was creative, revealing and healing for people who had no homes to call their own but could, for just a couple of hours, escape the anguish that being homeless brings.

“This was even better than I’d hoped,” said Simply the Basics President Meghan Freebeck. “There are no spaces, really, for people without means to just enjoy themselves like this, to come together and share, be social and have fun.”

Service Spotlight on The Smile Project

One of my favorite things about The Smile Project is the opportunity to connect with other people in the nonprofit and social good space. As a grantee of The Pollination Project, I can connect with others who care about making their world better.

That’s how I virtually met Meghan Freebeck, the founder of Simply the Basics in San Francisco. Even just watching this quick video about their work gives you a comprehensive idea of the ways they are bettering their world.

Her work speaks for itself, so without further ado, allow me to share Meghan and Simply the Basics.
