The Academy allows participants to see beyond the present and immediate, encouraging a plan for the future, one in which the cycle of homelessness and poverty is broken. The curriculum offers courses, led by trained volunteers, that teach core life skills, job readiness, financial management, and enrichment.
Our classes are uniquely taught by volunteers in their areas of expertise. Many job readiness programs provide training in basic skills, such as resume writing or job searching, however our program is unique because we also bring direct job skills that can be used to enhance resumes and likelihood of being accepted and maintaining employment. For example, a coffee barista will go to a homeless program with all equipment and teach clients how to make different styles of coffee so that they can list those skills on a resume and be much more likely to get a job at a coffee shop. Another example is a volunteer who has been an Office Manager for over 15 years. She leads the group in office administration to increase the likelihood that a client will have the specific skills needed when brought into an office.
Some Core Courses offered include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Healthy Eating on Food Stamps with no Kitchen
- Stress Management
- Communication Skills
- Financial Literacy & Money Management
- Drug/Alcohol Abuse Programs
- Self Care - taking care of yourself first
- Conflict Resolution & Anger Management
We also include courses for Self Fulfillment, such as:
- Yoga & Meditation
- Music Classes
- Creative Writing Workshops & Book Clubs
