On February 19th, we will honor the unique challenges faced by women experiencing homelessness.
There are a few propositions on the San Francisco Ballot this year that are of particular interest to the homeless population, and the one that has come up against a lot of confusion and scrutiny is Proposition Q. Proposition Q would ban encampments on city sidewalks and authorize city officials to remove them 24 hours after offering shelter
"Project Dahlia" is an initiative created by Natasha Noltimier-Strauss, Karen Chan, and Kris Fung, funded by a 2016 Impact Award from California College of the Arts. This initiative aims to support homeless women in San Francisco, by amplifying the work of Simply the Basics.
This past July, Natasha, Karen, and Kris connected with Simply the Basics with the hopes of helping our programs reach a broader audience, improve our marketing capacity, and offer products that could be distributed in outreach events and the community.
The goal is to empower women through hygiene to realize their capacity to overcome homelessness.
Here is their story!
Lydia Montagnese is the IT Director on the Board of Directors for Simply the Basics. She has been with the organization from day 1, strategizing programs and using her tech skills to improve the functionality and operations of the programs. Lydia is the co-founder of Givdo, a gamefied app that allows users to play for free and win money on behalf of nonprofits, and leads Bonjournal, a vegan lifestyle blog. We are proud and grateful to have Lydia's entrepenuerial insight and generous spirit on the Simply the Basics team, and particularly grateful for her friendship!
Lydia Petrovic is one of our founding Advisory Council members and Event Chair. Lydia connected with our founder at a networking event for women mentorships, and has since become an integral part of our Launch Party. Her enthusiasm, “go getter” work style, and passion for achieving our Mission is why we chose to highlight her for the month of August!
We are proud to feature Project Homeless Connect as a Partner Organization. In honor of Pride, all donations received over the course of Pride weekend will directly benefit Project Homeless Connect!
"After your first drop off, I told every staff, volunteer, and guest whom I ran into about your amazing services. There are so many small things that make a huge difference, and hygiene kits are one of those things. The hygiene kits you donated allowed us to go from passing out loose miscellaneous soaps to fulfilling a real need by providing a comprehensive kit including body wash, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and a toothbrush! Thank you for making such a big difference!” – Jenna, St. Anthony’s Staff
